Description
Located in Tonto National Forest, Four Peaks Trail #130 is a 21.2-mile out-and-back trail. The trail runs between the Mills Ridge Trailhead and Lone Pine Saddle Trailhead, northwest of Roosevelt Lake Marina. It traverses high ridges with significant elevation gains and features rugged and quiet Wilderness with panoramic views of the Superstition Wilderness, Four Peaks, Roosevelt Lake, and Apache Lake.From the Mills Ridge Trailhead, the trail ascends to the east side of the Four Peaks Wilderness, then follows Buckhorn Ridge to the southwest. Along Buckhorn Ridge, the trail may be hard to find and there are several steep sections. This is a strenuous trail with a total elevation gain of approximately 7,495 feet. It can be completed as a challenging day hike or as an overnight backpacking trip and is open to trail runners, hikers, backpackers, and equestrians. COMMON VEGETATIONIn the highest elevations, you will find mostly ponderosa pines and Douglas fir trees. The trail goes through grasslands and woodlands with manzanita, oak, and pinyon pine. COMMON WILDLIFEAmong the many species that inhabit the area are black bears, skunks, coyotes, deer, javelinas, mountain lions, rattlesnakes, scorpions, spiders, and more.WHEN TO VISITThis trail is best explored in the spring and fall.WATERParts of this trail are shared with the Arizona National Scenic Trail (AZT) and the AZT Water Report can be found at https://aztrail.org/explore/water-sources/.RESTRICTIONSFour Peaks Trail #130 passes through the Four Peaks Wilderness, a federally protected area where special Wilderness regulations apply. Some of these include:Mechanics and motorized vehicles are prohibited. There is a limit of 15 people per group. No more than 15 heads of livestock are allowed in a group.
