Description
The Big Sandy Trail is a short out-and-back hike following a mostly flat course inside the Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area.Beginning on a sandy path opposite the campground bathroom building and parking area, the trail begins with a short overlapping section with the Swift Water Trail, before a left fork leads hikers in a northern direction. The soft sand path follows a path through fire-scarred landscape slightly inland from the banks of the Colorado River.Heading through soft sand, the pace here tends to be slow, which is fine as the trail itself is fairly short. Heading just .45 miles before reaching its current end at the park's main road to the beach areas. While park maps mark it as heading further north, currently it ends at the road, though its further portion may be restored again in the future. From the road, hikers can walk along the asphalt to the beach, or turnaround and retrace their route back to the trailhead.Water and bathrooms are located at the trailhead. There is no shade and no other amenities located along the hike itself. The Big Swift Trail lies within the State Recreation Area and is subject to entry fees and open hours.
