Description
Journey along the Arrow Island Trail for a pleasant hike through second-growth hardwood forests to a scenic viewpoint overlooking Arrow Island. Visitors to the trail have the option to park at either the southern parking area off National Park Drive, or the northern parking area off Route 611 near the Arrow Island Overlook. Starting at the southern parking area, follow the short Arrow Island Spur to a junction with the Arrow Island Trail. Continue right along the trail, keeping your eyes peeled for remnants of the vibrant cultural history embedded in the forests along the Delaware. Back in the beginning of the 20th century, numerous hotels and tourist attractions were located along this stretch of river. If you're lucky, you just might see the remains of two different periods of occupation along the trail: first a series of old farm fences, and second a collection of stone supports that once upheld a raucous casino. Lastly, bring your eyes up to the towering cliffs above the trail for an exciting peek into prime peregrine falcon territory. For those with access to a pair of binoculars, this trail presents the perfect opportunity to use them! Upon reaching the trail's end, hop across the road to the Arrow Island Overlook for stunning views of the Delaware River and Arrow Island.
