Loop
The Al Merrill Loop begins and ends near the Dartmouth Outing Club facility at the end of Ravine Road in the White Mountain National Forest. Hikers typically complete the route by following the Ridge Trail in one direction and returning via the Al Merrill Trail, forming a wooded loop through classic New England forest. Starting from the trailhead, head into mixed hardwoods and gently gain elevation as the trail narrows into singletrack. At the Y-intersection, continue uphill on the Ridge Trail to reach the high point and a short spur to the 10th Mt. Div. Outlook, which offers a filtered view across the hills.
From the overlook, return to the main trail and descend gradually along the Al Merrill Trail, which follows a broader ski corridor through dense forest and occasional small stream crossings. Watch for roots, rocks, and uneven footing throughout. This route is accessible year-round, with hiking in warmer months and cross-country skiing or snowshoeing possible in winter. The combination of quiet woods, varied terrain, and a scenic outlook make this a rewarding option for moderate day hikes in the White Mountains.
