The trailhead parking lot on the west side of US Route 3 is small, accommodating only 10 to 15 vehicles, and fills quickly on pleasant summer and autumn weekends. Dogs are allowed on this route but must be kept on a leash at all times.

<p>Start the route at the Indian Head Trailhead parking area on the west side of US Route 3. Follow the blue-blazed Indian Head Trail west, traversing an open field before passing beneath the Franconia Notch Parkway underpass at 0.1 miles. Proceed past a small brook and cascade, then begin a steady climb.<p>
<p>At 1.0 mile, the trail steepens significantly and becomes increasingly rocky. Climb 1,538 vertical feet over the course of the hike. At 1.7 miles, reach the junction with the Mount Pemigewasset Trail. Turn right at the junction to stay on the Indian Head Trail and ascend the final 0.1 miles to the summit ledges of Mount Pemigewasset at 1.8 miles. The summit area features open granite ledges with steep drop-offs. Retrace your steps back down the Indian Head Trail to return to the trailhead on US Route 3.<p>
