Loop
The Snake Loop Trail, also called the Snake Creek Loop, starts and ends at the Giefer Creek Trailhead near Snowslip in Flathead National Forest. From the trailhead, follow Giefer Creek Trail #165 a short distance south to reach the signed junction that begins the loop. Hikers can complete the route in either direction. Traveling clockwise, the trail climbs steadily through mixed conifer forest, crossing Snake Creek and several smaller streams along the way. Summer wildflowers like beargrass and paintbrush add color to open meadows, and partial views toward the Lewis Range may appear from higher points along the ridge.
This is a remote, lightly maintained route with sections of overgrown tread, numerous downed trees, and unclear markings that can make navigation difficult. Water is available from creeks throughout the loop, but all sources should be treated. No permit is required for day use, though hikers should carry bear spray and follow standard precautions in this active black and grizzly bear habitat. The route closes the loop at the same junction and returns along Trail #165 to the Giefer Creek Trailhead. For those comfortable in a rugged backcountry setting, this forested circuit offers solitude and a quiet glimpse into the wild heart of the Flathead.
