There and Back
Starting at the Devil Creek Campground off US Hwy. 2, this route follows Devil Creek Trail #167 into the Great Bear Wilderness and climbs steadily to Elk Lake. The trail begins with forested singletrack and multiple creek crossings, including Devil Creek early on. The lower section can be muddy and overgrown, especially in early season. At a short distance from the trailhead, the trail begins to gain elevation more consistently, winding through dense forest and occasional open meadows filled with wildflowers during summer months.
As the trail continues climbing toward the lake, hikers encounter several unbridged stream crossings that can be challenging during high runoff. Wildlife is common in this remote zone, including grizzly bears—carry bear spray and follow proper food-storage practices. The route ends at Elk Lake, a quiet alpine basin offering excellent views and solitude for hikers and backpackers. Return the same way, retracing your route back to the trailhead. This is one of the more demanding day hikes in the Flathead National Forest, with rewarding scenery and a true wilderness feel.
