The Cat and Thomas Mountain Trail begins at a trailhead off Valley Woods Road and explores two scenic summits within the Adirondack Forest Preserve. From the parking area, follow the main trail as it gently climbs through mixed hardwood forest toward a signed junction. Turning right leads to Thomas Mountain first, a shorter climb that offers filtered views and a peaceful woodland setting. Continue south toward Cat Mountain, where the trail steepens over rocky stretches before reaching an open summit with expansive views of Lake George and the surrounding Adirondack foothills.
Hikers can complete the full route over both peaks or choose shorter out-and-back options to either summit. Expect seasonal streams along the way and watch for wildlife like white-tailed deer or migrating songbirds. The trail is accessible year-round, but winter travel may require snowshoes or crampons. Bear activity is possible—standard precautions apply. Cat Mountain’s open summit makes the journey especially worthwhile, offering one of the best day hikes near Bolton Landing.
