The Devil's Head Trail #611 begins near the picnic area adjacent to Devil's Head Campground. The 1.4-mile long trail climbs steadily through the woods and along a small creek, with an elevation gain of 940 feet. Once you reach the end of the trail, there are 143 steep steps to get to the actual fire lookout. The stairs are steep, and while there are railings the entire way up, hikers with a fear of heights might prefer to enjoy the views from the ground. The lookout is located at 9,748 feet elevation with outstanding views of the surrounding Front Range. The fire tower is usually staffed from mid-May through mid-September. Once you are done appreciated the 360-degree views, head back down the way you came.
Devil's Head Lookout, the last of the seven original Front Range Lookout towers still in continuous use, turns 103 years old this year (2015) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
