Path Type
There and Back
This 7.7-mile route begins at the Pinkham Notch Trailhead and turns around at the summit of Mount Washington at 6,289'.
Begin at the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center and follow the wide, rocky Tuckerman Ravine Trail climbing westward. At 1.2 miles, pass the Huntington Ravine Trail junction on the right, staying left. At 1.7 miles, pass the Raymond Path junction on the right, staying left. Continue straight past the Lion Head Trail junction at 2.2 miles to reach the Hermit Lake Shelters at 2.4 miles.
Beyond Hermit Lake, the trail narrows and climbs into the floor of the glacial cirque. Around 2.9 miles, begin the steep climb up the headwall, ascending rocky, wet switchbacks to the ravine's lip. At 3.2 miles, cross the Alpine Garden Trail junction, continuing straight up to an intersection around 3.2 miles. Turn right to continue on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail and up the final talus slope. Follow rock cairns and painted blazes across the highly exposed boulder field for approximately 0.5 miles to the summit of Mount Washington.
Retrace your steps for the descent, exercising caution on the steep, potentially slick headwall rocks.
