The San Souci Loop begins from the main trailhead off Broadway Avenue in Sans Souci County Park, just inland from Great South Bay. The wide, well-marked path travels through quiet pine barrens and mixed hardwood forest, making gentle turns as it passes several small lakes and seasonal streams. At the first Y-intersection, stay left to follow the broader loop clockwise. Around halfway, a few narrower side trails break off toward the eastern edge of the park — these are navigable but can be overgrown depending on season. Stick to the primary trail for an easy, continuous loop through shaded woodland, with occasional wildlife sightings and good opportunities for birding.
The route’s flat profile and short distance make it ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone looking for a quick forest escape near Sayville or Bayport. A few benches and trail signs are spaced throughout, and dogs are welcome on leash. This is one of the more accessible nature hikes on Long Island, especially for year-round visits.
