Loop
This loop route begins and ends at the main trailhead near Traffic Street in East Otto State Forest. From the trailhead, follow wide paths along former logging roads that wind through mixed hardwoods and conifer stands. Early on, the trail weaves across low ridges and gentle drainages, with occasional stream crossings and patches of wetlands—most of which dry up by late summer. At several unsigned junctions, keep left to stay on the main path as it bends north and gradually climbs through quiet, shaded forest.
Around the halfway point, the route curves west and begins a gentle descent past dispersed campsites and open glades where deer and wild turkeys are often spotted. Most intersections are unmarked, so bring a map or GPS to stay oriented. The final leg heads south through slightly thicker vegetation before closing the loop back at the trailhead.
This is one of the more peaceful day hikes in western New York, with opportunities for solitude, light navigation, and primitive camping in a low-use state forest setting.
