This moderate hiking route begins at the trailhead off Point Peter Road near Gowanda, New York. From the parking area, follow the marked trail into Deer Lick Conservation Area, managed by The Nature Conservancy. The route forms a broad loop through mature hemlock forest and along the rim of a deep gorge carved by Cattaraugus Creek. Several trail junctions allow for shorter or longer variations, but staying on the main loop keeps hikers on a steady path with occasional steep and uneven sections.
Expect some rocky footing near Deer Lick Creek and potential mud during spring and after rainfall. At roughly the halfway point, side trails offer access to waterfall views and a closer look into the gorge—use caution near steep drop-offs and slick rock surfaces. Birdwatchers and wildflower enthusiasts will find spring and early summer especially rewarding. Dogs are allowed on leash, and while water is present seasonally, it should be filtered before drinking. Open year-round, this route is best hiked from April through October when trail conditions are more reliable and the forest is at its most vibrant.
