Description
While you'll experience breathtaking beauty in the canyon, this trail makes even seasoned hikers earn their scenic views! Little Wild Horse Canyon is fairly narrow, and you'll want to be aware that there are some tight squeezes and drop-offs along the way. The trail narrows pretty quickly, though the first 1.5 miles from the trailhead are mostly open. From the trailhead, and the junction with the Bell's Canyon Trail, you'll enter the narrow passageway that winds through Little Wild Horse Canyon. This is as alien as it is beautiful, and you'll probably want to break out the camera for some photos. Once you've made the through the narrows, you'll follow the canyon for 3 small drops, with the first one being about 6' high into a small pool of water. You can avoid the water if you're careful and use the log and stone bridge. The toughest obstacle is the last one, a pour off about 10' high, and you can scramble up next to it on either side (Class 4 on the left and Class 3 on the right, facing down-canyon), or you can notice that a ramp on the right side leads easily to the top from the canyon floor. Other obstacles are no harder than Class 3. This is the trickiest obstacle for a dog and where a harness comes in handy. Most visitors link this trail with the Bell's Canyon Trail, and finish their journey in this canyon. Both trails highlight the gorgeous desert sandstone, and are about equal in terrain.
