Description
The main attraction at the heart of Utah's Goblin Valley State Park is a self-guided exploration of the valley itself. Geological uplift along with wind and water erosion have combined to sculpt the Jurassic Period deposits laid down some 170 million years ago into thousands of unique sandstone shapes near the cliffs encompassing the valley floor. Even amongst the wide array of wonders available in Utah, this area stands out as a true gem for outdoor enthusiasts. While there are established trails within the park, the valley is entirely undeveloped. Park maps indicate there are three valley regions, but there is no marked signage within the valley itself. The region's environment is harsh, and only few plant and animal species have adapted well enough to call it home. In certain ways, this adds to the beauty of the rugged landscape. A campground is located on the west end of the park (24 spaces, two yurts), and BLM land outside of the park also offers camping opportunities. Note that, for some visitors, it is easy to lose directional orientation on the undulated valley floor. Please carry sufficient water and take the necessary safety precautions for an enjoyable visit.
