Loop
Starting from the West Road parking area in Hampstead, this route uses a series of linked trails—Oak, Lichen, Maple, Dogwood, and Birch—to form a 5 K loop around the southern part of the Western Conservation Area. The route begins on the Oak Trail heading east into mixed hardwood forest, then turns onto the Lichen Trail for a short distance before connecting with Maple. At a signed junction, stay right to continue onto Dogwood, a longer segment that leads through wetlands and over old stone walls. Reconnect with the Maple trail and then turn right on the Birch Trail, which returns hikers to the western side of the network and reconnects with Lichen to complete the circuit.
This route remains on mostly gentle terrain with well-marked junctions and makes a reliable option for a casual outing or trail run. Highlights include shaded forest paths, small clearings, and varied ecosystems that offer wildlife viewing opportunities in all seasons.
