Loop
The Big Butte Loop begins from the Montana Tech Open Space area, commonly accessed via the north parking area on Orofino Gulch Road. From the trailhead, the route forms a gradual loop around the slopes of Big Butte—also known locally as “M-Hill”—providing consistent views of the city below and surrounding ridgelines. The path climbs gently across rocky, open terrain with a few steeper sections but remains approachable for hikers, runners, and mountain bikers alike.
This multi-use route is part of the Big Butte Open Space, managed by Butte–Silver Bow Parks & Recreation. Trail users should be prepared for minimal shade and exposed conditions, especially during warmer months. Snow may linger in winter and early spring, but the trail is typically passable year-round. There are no water sources, so bring your own. The highlight of this short, close-to-town route is the elevated perspective over Butte and the chance to explore the volcanic geology of Big Butte’s eroded neck.
