This rugged route begins and ends near the end of FR 100, south of Alder, Montana, in the remote Snowcrest Range. Most hikers start by following the Eagles Nest Creek Trail up a narrow drainage through thick forest, with several creek crossings and a steady elevation gain. The trail climbs into open subalpine meadows dotted with wildflowers and scattered trees, offering wide views across the Ruby River Valley. At a high pass, the route joins the top of Jon Gulch Trail for the return descent.
After cresting the ridge, follow the Jon Gulch Trail down through a mix of open slopes and timbered drainages. The descent is steep in places and occasionally overgrown, but the route remains generally easy to follow with attentive navigation. Reliable water is available along both creeks, though all sources should be filtered. Expect few trail markers and limited maintenance, especially in the upper reaches. Grizzly bear activity is possible throughout the area, so carry bear spray and make noise in brushy sections. This is a rewarding route for hikers seeking solitude, wildlife sightings, and big-mountain views.
