Description
Marked by boulders and a steep slope, the hike to Bonticou Crag is not for the faint of heart, but for those who conquer the challenge of the crag there are spectacular views and a major hit of exhilaration. A high point in the Hudson Valley, the 6-mile access trail climbs a total of about 1,200 feet, the last and most strenuous feet of which are unmarked and trail-less, a boulder-hopping climb that yields, through effort, a wonderful glimpse of the surrounding Catskill Mountains. Access Bonticou Crag via a quick, easy hike on wooded trails and gravel paths. Similar to Breakneck Ridge, but shorter, the tricky rock scramble up the crag tests even experienced hikers. Carefully follow the yellow blazes up, over, under, and around giant white boulders. At the top is one of the best views of the Hudson Valley with glimpses of the Catskills to the northeast. Continue through the trees, passing small viewpoints as you head north towards Table Rocks. These wide, flat rocks are the perfect place to stop for lunch or to take in the sweeping view of the Catskills. Take care to avoid the crevices between the megaliths;many are deeper than expected. On the way back to the parking lot, pass by the Slingerland Pavilion, inside which is a detailed sign describing the Catskill Mountains as viewed from the pavilion. Lastly, stop at the Million Dollar Viewaa breathtaking panorama of the Hudson Valley and the Catskills worth every penny of its name.
