Starting from the trailhead near Huguenot Street and Mulberry Street in New Paltz, this gentle route explores the Nyquist-Harcourt Wildlife Sanctuary. The trail follows flat, well-maintained paths and boardwalks through meadow and marshland just west of the Wallkill River. Stay left at the initial Y-intersection to follow the outer loop in a clockwise direction. Several spurs lead toward river overlooks and seasonal wetlands, offering opportunities to spot migratory birds and local wildlife.
The terrain remains level throughout, making this an approachable walk for hikers of all ages, especially those interested in birdwatching or exploring the quieter corners of the Hudson Valley. Expect potentially muddy sections in spring and early summer, as well as icy patches in winter. This lowland sanctuary route offers a peaceful, nature-focused experience just minutes from downtown New Paltz.
