Arizona Trail Passage 36: Coconino Rim

AZT Passage 36: Coconino Rim is an 18-mile point-to-point section of the roughly 800-mile Arizona National Scenic Trail. This moderately rated section runs from Moqui Stage Station to Grandview Lookout Tower and is located north of Flagstaff, AZ and south of Grand Canyon Village. This passage is accessible for hikers, trail runners, long-distance backpackers, equestrians and mountain bikers. Passage 36 gradually ascends onto the Coconino Plateau and continues northwest along the Coconino Rim.This passage offers a classic northern Arizona experience, with long, winding stretches through beautiful ponderosa pine forest, prime elk habitat, and tantalizing views of the Grand Canyon. The trail stays mostly on singletrack, with occasional doubletrack, as it gradually makes its way from a high desert grassland to a dense pine forest. This relatively flat stretch has abundant campsites, most notably at the northern end near the Grandview Lookout Tower. The Grandview Lookout Tower is an 80-ft tall fire lookout in Kaibab National Forest near the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The towers features incredible views of the Grand Canyon for those willing to make the trek to the top of it!This passage runs parallel to Coconino Rim Road which is accessible by car and offers plenty of dispersed camping.
