Description
AZT Passage 37: Grand Canyon - South Rim is a 22.3 -mile point-to-point section of the roughly 800-mile Arizona National Scenic Trail. This section is located north of Flagstaff, AZ and runs from Grandview Lookout Tower to South Kaibab Trailhead. This passage is rated as easy to moderate and is accessible for hikers, trail runners, long-distance backpackers, equestrians and mountain bikers. Passage 37 begins at the Grandview Lookout Tower, follows the Tusayan Bike Paths toward Tusayan and then enters Grand Canyon National Park. In the park it makes use of old double tracks and bike paths as it winds its way toward Yaki Point and the South Kaibab Trailhead. This section passes through beautifully forested terrain with minimal changes in elevation. The Grandview Lookout Tower is a fire lookout located in Kaibab National Forest. Those brave enough to climb the staircase inside of the 80ft steel tower will find breathtaking panoramic views overlooking the surrounding pine forest and out to the Grand Canyon. The trail in this section goes right through the small town of Tusayan which is a gateway community for Grand Canyon National Park. The town itself offers basic amenities, a few restaurants, and a visitor center with more information about the park. After entering the national park the route joins the paved Greenway Trail, passes trails connecting to Mather Campground, and Grand Canyon Village as well as the Grand Canyon Visitor Center.Note. There is a fee to enter Grand Canyon National Park by vehicle. Contact the park service for more details. DIRECTIONSFollow Arizona National Scenic Trail signs/trail markers.WATERCheck the Arizona Trail Water Report for current information at: https://aztrail.org/explore/water-sources/.ADDITIONAL INFORMATION INFORMATIONArizona National Scenic Trail Association: www.aztrail.orgKaibab National Forest, Tusayan Ranger District, http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/kai/, 1-(928)638-2443.Grand Canyon National Park, http://www.nps.gov/grca/, 1-(928) 638-7888.BLM Information Center 1-(602) 417-9300.
