There and Back
This route begins along the North Fork of Bear Creek, accessible from the end of Burger Creek Road in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The trail initially follows the North Fork of Bear Creek briefly before reaching a signed junction with the Lake Cameron Trail. From here, turn north and continue along Cameron Creek as the terrain gradually transitions to more open, subalpine forest. Wildflower-filled meadows and small tributaries offer scenic stops as the trail climbs deeper into the drainage.
As the route gains elevation, expect steeper sections and rocky footing before reaching Lake Cameron, a quiet alpine lake nestled below steep ridges. Moose and mountain goats are sometimes seen along the shoreline or on the surrounding slopes. The return follows the same trail. This is a remote, lightly traveled route ideal for experienced hikers seeking solitude and high-country scenery in southwestern Montana.
