Description
The North Cottonwood Creek Trail begins at the North Cottonwood Trailhead north of Bozeman and climbs steadily into the western side of the Bridger Range. The route follows the creek through dense stands of lodgepole pine and fir, with ample shade and several water crossings in the lower section. Around a short distance in, the trail veers northeast and gains elevation more consistently as it leaves the creek behind and heads toward the interior ridges of the range. Hikers will encounter mid-summer wildflowers, bird activity, and the occasional elk or moose. As elevation increases, the forest opens to glimpses of surrounding peaks and long views west toward the Gallatin Valley. Though the maintained trail eventually fades into less-defined paths and ridgelines, strong hikers can continue toward the crest of the Bridgers or connect with other high routes in the Bridger-Bangtails area. This is prime grizzly bear habitat, carry bear spray and stay alert.
