West Coyote Hills Trails

The West Coyote Hills Trails are a network of several short trails within the Robert E Ward Preserve.Following years of work from a dedicated collective of people aiming to create public green space from these former oil fields, progress has been made in creating and maintaining a series of trails in the Coyote Hills area. Today, there are three short trails within the preserve - one out-and-back path with two smaller loops accessible from it.The green space is accessible from a small trailhead on Euclid Street directly across from Laguna Road. From here, a couple small switchbacks quickly climb and leave the roadside behind as it climbs the hill, eventually peaking at views to the San Gabriel Mountains as well as the towers of several downtown areas. While the highway noise and views of neighboring homes tend to follow the trails, there are pockets where it is easy to feel far removed from the surrounding suburban sprawl.A few art installations and interpretive signs are visible along the way, and trail forks tend to be well marked. Visitors can choose their route based on the distance they are desiring. With about 250 feet total elevation gain along the trails, the paths are well maintained and offer a small amount of challenge across their course.There are no amenities of any kind located along the trails, and there is very little shade.Free onstreet parking is available along Laguna Road directly across Euclid Street from the trailhead. Trails are open from dawn to dusk. Bicycles, dogs and horses are not permitted on trails or within the preserve.
