Redwood Grove Trail

The Redwood Grove Trail through Carbon Canyon Regional Park is an easy walk leading to the only successful non-native coast redwood grove in Southern California. Reached by an out-and-back trail that stretches 1.15 miles each direction, the grove is a shady and unique destination in this corner of the county. The spacious grove lies slightly off the beaten path, ensuring a sense of quiet. Much of the trail has suffered recent fire and flood damage and remains in a rehabilitative state. In 1970, a local bank promotion gave away redwood seedlings to customers, with the remainder being given to the county. Several years later, rangers planted these trees as part of the park's grand opening. Today, 241 coast redwood trees stand in a shady corner of the park, forming a grove that is significantly more shady and cool than the surrounding dry hillside. The adjacent Carbon Canyon Dam towers above the basin, its construction having led to the dissolution of the past village of Olinda. Vehicle entrance to Carbon Canyon Regional Park is $3 on weekdays and $5 on weekdays, with some exceptions. Park hours are generally 7 a.m. until sunset. Alternatively, hikers can park at the Chino Hills State Park Discovery Center and walk a short path to the trailhead. Trails from the center of Carbon Canyon Regional Park and the surrounding neighborhood also exist, which can trim some distance from the hike. Bikes, equestrians and dogs on leash are permitted. Rattlesnakes and mountain lions have been spotted in the area before.
