The Beehunter Trail begins near the Red House Administration Building in the Red House Lake Area of Allegany State Park. From the trailhead, the route forms a wooded circuit through a quiet stretch of second-growth forest. Hikers can travel in either direction, but most head clockwise, beginning with a gentle ascent through mixed hardwoods and scattered interpretive signs. After a short distance, the trail reaches several small stream crossings—water may be available here, but it’s best to carry and treat your own.
The terrain remains moderate throughout, with rolling sections and occasional muddy spots depending on the season. Wildlife like deer and songbirds are common, especially in quieter stretches. About halfway through, the route offers partial views of Red House Lake through the trees, especially when leaves are down. In fall, vibrant foliage adds a striking contrast to the trail’s wooded landscape. This is a year-round hiking route, though winter visitors should expect snow-covered sections—ideal for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.
