Loop
The Blue Heron Trail forms a full loop through Cutler Park Reservation, beginning and ending at the main parking area off Kendrick Street in Needham. Hikers can also start from the smaller Needham Street lot at the southern end. From Kendrick Street, the route heads south along the western side of Kendrick Pond before entering rougher terrain with marsh crossings, exposed roots, and narrow boardwalks. After crossing the boardwalk near Powell’s Island, take the first right to continue south. Pass through the tunnel and turn right again, continuing across additional boardwalks to reach the Needham Street trailhead. From there, hikers can return north along the Charles River, following the eastern sides of the loops around Powell’s Island and Kendrick Pond to complete the circuit.
This route winds through one of the largest remaining freshwater marshes on the middle Charles River and features notable glacial landforms, including eskers and drumlins. Trail markings can be intermittent—especially at unsigned junctions—so carrying a map or GPS is recommended. While the terrain is generally gentle, sections may be muddy or wet in spring or after rain. Kendrick Pond offers scenic overlooks, and the surrounding wetlands are a reliable spot for bird-watching, with sightings of great blue herons, warblers, and hawks.
