There and Back
This route begins at the Peabody Brook Trailhead along North Road in Shelburne, New Hampshire, with limited roadside parking near private homes. From the start, the trail follows Peabody Brook uphill through a shaded forest of birch and maple. A short distance in, a steep spur leads to Giant Falls—a powerful cascade well worth the quick detour. Past the falls, the trail climbs steadily toward Dream Lake, crossing the brook several times and transitioning into spruce-fir forest at higher elevations. Dream Lake sits tucked below the ridge and offers a peaceful rest stop or overnight camp option, with reliable water and views of the surrounding peaks.
Beyond Dream Lake, the route grows more rugged and may require light route-finding. The trail becomes less defined as it ascends toward the open summit of Bald Cap Peak. Expect rocky footing and stretches of unmaintained path as you gain elevation. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the Mahoosucs, Carter Range, and the Androscoggin Valley. The return follows the same route back down through the forested valley.
