The Underhill Trail and Four Soldiers Path route begins at the Mount Crescent Trailhead near Randolph. The route starts on the Carlton Notch Trail, climbing steadily through mixed hardwood forest and crossing seasonal streambeds in the first section before reaching a subtle saddle and the Crescent Ridge Trail. About a short distance in, the trail enters mossy boreal terrain, with occasional moose sign and infrequent encounters with other hikers. Continue north following Underhill Trail downhill to the junction to follow Four Soldiers Path along a narrower, sometimes faint trail.
Four Soldiers Path contours across a ridge, offering periodic views toward Mt. Randolph and the surrounding peaks. In several sections, the trail becomes overgrown—strong map-reading skills and attention to navigation are important. Expect rocky footing and short scrambles in higher terrain. The route gradually drops elevation as it loops back toward the Mount Crescent Trail, reconnecting near the lower forested slopes. From here, retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.
This remote-feeling route offers a rewarding backcountry experience for those seeking solitude, wildlife, and varied terrain in the White Mountain National Forest.
