Description
Crazy Creek Falls is a really cool place to visit. It is a massive cascade that is very hard to give any justice to with photos. It is several hundred feet long and much cooler in person. You can hear the roar of these falls from a half mile away in a nearby campground. The trail head is located 11 miles east of Cooke City, Montana and is the beginning stages of the Beartooth Scenic Highway. The road is usually only open memorial day to labor day. Summer comes late here and it can be cold at any time of year. The trail head is not signed or marked. The parking is located directly across from the Crazy Creek Campground. From the parking area you walk through the forest and will quickly be at the base of the falls. When visiting in late May, there were almost no people on the road but had the drawback of less water. From the base, continue up the beautiful forest trail. This area is a very common place for bears. Bear spray is a very good idea in this area where there are very few places for the bears to hide from you. After about a half mile from the parking lot there will be a rock shelf on your left. Go off trail here across the shelf to the top of the falls. Be sure to enjoy the pretty views of the spectacular Absaroka Mountain Range. Once at the top of the falls there is a lot of opportunity for fun. There are huge slabs you can picnic or relax on and even small pools you can swim in. This would be a fun place to bring the kids with some very careful supervision as wandering children could easily be swept away. Return the way you came once you have enjoyed this very unique and fun area.
