Description
The canals around Bishop offer many opportunities to enjoy a leisurely walk, run, or bicycle ride while enjoying the scenic beauty of the area. One great option is the North Fork of Bishop Creek Canal, located a bit north of town.To start the hike, find a place to park off Dixon Lane where the road crosses over the canal. Be sure not to block any gates. You'll then begin by walking through the pedestrian gate and following the canal in a northerly direction. This stretch of trail is beautiful with large trees providing shade. In about 1/2 a mile you'll cross Riverside Road. You'll then be able to choose which side of the canal you want to walk on (you can walk the opposite side on the return trip).Continue along the dirt road as the hike follows the meandering canal. This section is pretty open and exposed, but offers stunning views of Mount Tom and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. You'll likely meet some cows in the pasture land out here. The hike continues until ending at the Owens River. Here you'll have great views of the Volcanic Tableland that rises just to the north of you, and you'll even be able to see climbers hiking up to the Happy Boulders area.Cross over the canal and return on the opposite side for a slight change of pace. Continue until once again crossing Riverside Road. Make sure you are on the east side of the canal for the last half mile back to Dixon Lane and the end of the hike.
