Description
Saint Mary Peak is a peak in the Bitterroot Mountains. It boasts an impressive 2,000 feet of prominence and can easily be seen from the valley floor below. It is one of the most acessible peaks in the Bitterroot Mountains that is over 9,000 feet, so it tends to get a little crowded. From the summit, be prepared to be amazed as you can see the surrounding peaks of the Bitterroot Mountains, the Bitterroot Valley, the Saphire Mountains, the Rattlesnake Mountains, the Swan Range, and the Mission Mountains. The trail is very well maintained and is extremely dog friendly. There is a fire tower at the top that is manned during fire season. This peak is accessible in the winter for backcountry skiing and snowboarding as well. There are deer, bears, wolves, and elk in the area. Snow persists on the mountain well into July, so make sure you're prepared to slog through some. The highlight of the summit is the open air toilet that will be the best view you've ever seen while using the facilites. All in all this is an incredible day trip that you will not want to skip!
