Description
Blodgett Canyon is one of the many canyons that cut through the Bitterroot Mountains. It is a fairly easy hike that offers big views immediately from the parking lot. Bring sunscreen and a lot of water because this area doesn't offer a lot of shade. The canyon was burned in 2000; this means that the trail is unshaded and can become hot, but it also allows you to enjoy the breathtaking granite cliffs 100% of the way through the hike. The trail is very straightforward and easy to follow. Blodgett Creek flows down through the canyon from the high elevation Blodgett Lake. The views of the creek rushing under the canyon walls is maginificent, and you will find yourself stopping and staring a lot during this hike! Be careful not to trip because the trail contains a lot of rocks that you could stumble over while looking skyward. The granite cliffs were carved from galciers, which is why the peaks are so jagged. During the runoff in the spring, look for the many waterfalls that cascade off the surounding cliffs. The bridge is very sturdy and offers a good spot to relax by the creek, eat a little bit, and enjoy the 360-degree views.
