This moderate route begins at the Sourdough Canyon Trailhead just south of Bozeman and follows the well-traveled Bozeman Creek Trail through shaded forest and alongside the flowing creek. After several miles of steady climbing on a wide path, continue past the bridge crossing and stay right at trail junctions to reach Mystic Lake. The lake sits in a broad alpine basin and is a popular destination for hikers and bikers alike. Campsites and water access are available here, making it a good basecamp for overnights.
To complete the full route, continue along the trail south of Mystic Lake, then ascend to the open ridgeline via a steeper, rockier climb. This section requires more effort and includes exposed terrain, but offers sweeping views across the Gallatin Range. From the high point, descend gradually through meadows and pockets of forest before reconnecting with the Bozeman Creek Trail and retracing the final stretch to the trailhead. Wildlife is frequently seen in this area—carry bear spray and be prepared for encounters. This scenic loop blends forested solitude with high-elevation views and offers one of the best alpine day hikes near Bozeman.
