Dunnfield Creek Trail begins a short distance from the trailhead at Dunnfield Creek Parking Area. To access the trail, you can begin along the AT with its famous white blazes for half a mile. Then take the Blue Blaze Trail on the right for 0.2 miles. Look for the three greenish trail start blazes. The blazes are a little infrequent along the trail but it is easy enough to follow northeast along the scenic Dunnfield Creek.
The trail crosses over the creek a few times, but there are high water bypasses to allow you to pass the crossings. However, they should be manageable due to numerous boulders and fallen trees. After 1.1 miles, the red-blazed Holly Springs Trail appears on the right - it would take you up to the AT if you fancy. After another perhaps 1.5 miles and a few more stream crossings the trail will turn north, leaving the stream, and gain elevation a little steeper before dropping down to an intersection with the Sunfish Pond Fire Road and the AT.
