This easy route starts from the Brundrett Avenue Trailhead within Deer Jump Reservation in Andover, Massachusetts. Begin by heading west on the Loop Trail, which curves gently north through mixed hardwood and hemlock forest. At the northern boundary of the reservation, turn left onto the Deer Jump Trail—part of the Merrimack River Trail—and continue south, following the riverbank. This stretch offers intermittent views of the Merrimack River from high bluffs shaped by glacial erosion. The route briefly merges with Brundrett Avenue before dipping back into the woods. Stay on the Deer Jump Trail as it continues south through peaceful woodland. As the route approaches a residential area, make a series of three left turns at successive trail junctions to loop back toward the previous path on Harold R. Rafton Memorial Loop Trail. Turn right onto Brundrett Avenue, then reconnect with the Loop Trail to return to the original trailhead.
Along the way, hikers pass through varied forest habitat and may spot deer, foxes, or birdlife such as great blue herons and owls. Educational signs provide insights into the area’s ecology. Managed by the Andover Village Improvement Society (AVIS), this trail is open year-round and is well-suited for short day hikes in the Merrimack Valley. Dogs are welcome on leash, and hikers should be aware of uneven terrain and seasonal bow hunting in designated zones.
