There and Back
This route begins and ends at the Snowy Mountain Trailhead, after reaching the summit and historic fire tower on Snowy Mountain.
Begin at the trailhead on the west side of Route 30, roughly 7 miles south of Indian Lake. Register at the kiosk and head west. The first 1.8 miles of the route ascend gradually through hemlock groves, crossing several small streams on wooden planks and stepping stones.
At 1.8 miles, the trail begins a steep, sustained climb. Ascend over 1,500 vertical feet over the next 1.6 miles, navigating exposed roots, boulders, and slick rock slabs that frequently channel water runoff. At 3.4 miles, negotiate a steep rock chimney to emerge onto a grassy ledge overlooking Indian Lake.
Follow the red trail markers northwest for the final 0.2 miles to reach the summit of Snowy Mountain at 3.6 miles. Climb the steps of the 33-foot historic fire tower for panoramic views.
Retrace your steps to return.
