Mount Emmons via Donaldson Mountain

No rating
The shorter way to the westernmost High Peak, skipping Seward's steep climb for the gentler Calkins Brook herd path. It is still a long, wet, unmarked day, ending on a quiet wooded summit at the far end of the Seward Range.

Description
The route starts and ends at the Coreys Road parking area and reaches the summit of Mount Emmons (4,040'), about 14 miles round trip, by way of the Calkins Brook route and Donaldson Mountain (4,140'). Follow the red-marked Blueberry Trail from the lot, taking the hiking trail, not the wetter horse trail beside it. At 1.4 miles, turn right at the junction toward Shattuck Clearing and the Calkins Brook route, and follow the marked trail to the unmarked herd path on your left at 3.4 miles. Route-finding begins here. Climb the herd path about 2.5 miles to the Seward Range ridge, a path that is steep in places and crosses several streams. Turn toward Donaldson and continue about 0.2 mile to its summit, just off the trail. Follow the ridge herd path 300 vertical feet down into a col, then 200 vertical feet up to Emmons. The path is muddy, with some blowdown to detour around. Return the same way, noting where the Calkins Brook herd path leaves the ridge about 0.2 mile from Donaldson's summit.
