Grace Peak

No rating
A remote approach to Grace Peak that follows unmarked herd paths up the Boquet River drainage from Route 73, crossing the river several times before a steep climb up the Great Slide. There are no trail markers, and the open rock near the summit rewards the route-finding with views across the High Peaks. This is the single-peak route to Grace Peak; hikers who want to summit several Dix Range peaks in one trip usually approach from Elk Lake instead.

Description
The route starts at the unmarked pullout where Route 73 crosses the North Fork Boquet River and ends on Grace Peak, about 5.1 miles away, entirely on unmarked herd paths. Carry a map, compass, and downloaded GPS track. From the bridge, follow the herd path along the south bank of the North Fork, which drops to stream level within about 10 minutes. Cross to the north side; this crossing is easy to miss. Continue past the small outlet stream of Round Pond, then cross the North Fork one last time and climb over small rises, passing a short side path to Lilypad Pond at 1.3 miles. Reach the South Fork and stay beside it, seeing the drainage from the Dix cirque joining in from the right at 3.2 miles. Cross that drainage and continue upstream, rock-hopping in places, until the path crosses to the south bank and climbs away from the water. Pass the first rock slide on your left, which has a poor exit; do not climb it. About 5–10 minutes farther, climb the second slide, the Great Slide of East Dix, avoiding wet rock. The last 1.5 miles are steep. At the top, the summit is a short walk on herd paths to your right. In wet weather, a herd path to the right of the slide reaches the col; turn left at its top for about 0.2 miles to the summit. Retrace your steps; the slide can be descended with care.
