Description
The route starts and ends at the Osceola Trailhead on Tripoli Road. Follow the Osceola Trail north as it climbs through mixed hardwood forest of birch, beech, and maple, following an old logging grade for roughly the first mile before the grade steepens into a sustained, rocky ascent typical of White Mountain approach trails. The forest gradually gives way to red spruce and balsam fir as the trail gains the ridge. At 3.2 miles, break out onto the open ledges of the Mount Osceola summit, a broad rock dome with views west toward Waterville Valley and the Tripyramids and north toward Franconia Ridge, having gained roughly 2,050 vertical feet. To continue to East Peak, follow the ridge north through stunted fir and open rock; at approximately 3.7 miles the trail reaches The Chimney, a 20-to-30-foot downclimb through a cracked rock face that is the route's technical crux — no rope is needed, but the holds are awkward and exposed, particularly with a full pack, and the section is hazardous when wet or icy (a bypass exists just north of The Chimney for winter travel with crampons). Below The Chimney, the trail drops into a shallow, wooded col before climbing a short distance to the open ledges of East Peak at approximately 4.2 miles. Retrace the route to return; The Chimney is more exposed to climb back up than it is to descend, so budget extra time and caution there, especially with wet rock or a loaded pack. Round trip is approximately 8.4 miles with roughly 2,800 vertical feet of cumulative gain.
