Matterhorn Peak

Matterhorn Peak is a thirteener located in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, rising to an elevation of 13,596 feet. This 6.2-mile out-and-back route offers a challenging ascent to the summit, providing expansive views of the surrounding wilderness, including nearby Wetterhorn Peak and Uncompahgre Peak. The trail begins along Matterhorn Creek, climbing through a dense forest for the first 0.6 miles. Due to historical mining in the area, the creek water contains heavy minerals and metals; hikers are advised not to drink from it, even with filtration. The tree line is reached at approximately 1.3 miles, which serves as the final suitable area for camping. At 1.77 miles, the trail splits, with the right fork heading toward Matterhorn Peak and the left toward Wetterhorn Peak. After another 0.7 miles, the path splits again; turning left leads to the base of Matterhorn Peak. From this junction, the defined trail fades, and hikers must navigate across open alpine terrain. The final approach to the summit is a Class 3 scramble involving loose rock and significant exposure. Hikers should plan to summit early in the day to avoid frequent and dangerous afternoon lightning storms. Additionally, seasonal domestic sheep herds graze in this area during the summer months and may block portions of the trail.
