A must do route for the area handpicked by local experts.
No permit is required, but the route enters the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness: dogs must stay leashed, and group-size and campfire rules apply.
Clear Creek Road (CR 390) is a 2WD dirt road to Winfield; the final approach to the upper trailheads requires high-clearance 4WD.
Path Type
There and Back
The route begins and ends at the North Huron (Lake Ann) trailhead, at 10,560 feet, reaching the summit of Huron Peak, for a round trip of about 9 miles.
From the trailhead kiosk, walk south toward Apostle Basin and Lake Ann. At 1.5 miles, reach a junction and stay left, then continue 0.1 miles to an unmarked junction and turn sharply left onto an old, unmaintained mine trail choked with deadfall. Follow it east to a corner at 11,600 feet, a key junction that's easy to miss: a faint trail drops southeast into the trees just before a shack on the right.
This is the route's main navigation crux — the trail disappears in downed timber, and if lost, continue southeast through forest without losing elevation until you reach a boulder field. Cross it east toward more trees, re-enter forest briefly, and exit at a second boulder field above 11,800 feet. Cross this one through willows to a small cliff band near 11,900 feet, pass left of it, and continue east below Huron's southwest slopes toward Point 13,472' to a flat spot at 12,500 feet below the saddle. Climb north on grass turning to talus and scree to the saddle above 13,000 feet.
Turn left onto the southeast ridge and follow it northwest over 13,400 feet and a broad shoulder at 13,780 feet, then scramble over rock outcroppings to the summit.
Return the same way; the crux near 11,600 feet is just as easy to miss in reverse.
