Castle Peak Northeast Ridge

This route begins and ends at the lower Castle Creek Trailhead (2WD parking area) along Castle Creek Road, after reaching the 14,274' summit of Castle Peak. Follow Pearl Pass Road to the south, climbing steadily alongside Castle Creek. At 3.0 miles, approach the primary 4WD parking area and keep right to head up Montezuma Road. Continue ascending the rough, steep 4WD road as it curves southwest into Montezuma Basin. At 4.7 miles, pass the historic Montezuma Mine ruins on the right. Continue along the road, keeping right at 5.1 miles where a trail splits off of the road to the left. At the end of Montezuma road, head southwest across the basin's talus and semi-permanent snowfields. Climb the steep, loose scree slope to gain the saddle below Castle Peak around 5.7 miles. Follow the exposed, Class 2 northeast ridge over large, blocky talus and stable rock to reach the summit of Castle Peak at 6.1 miles. Crux: The upper northeast ridge from 13,700' to the summit, where sustained Difficult Class 2 terrain demands precise navigation through two rightward bypass sections. Straying off-route — easy given Considerable route-finding difficulty — increases exposure significantly. The final pitch above the 14,000' saddle is steep and loose with rocky obstacles. The headwall above 12,800' is a secondary crux when snow is present; an ice axe may be warranted early in the season. Retrace your steps back down the ridge and through Montezuma Basin to the trailhead.
