Trail Overview
Pocahontas 181 is designated as "Most Difficult" and is restricted to motorcycles only. Entering from the north, the trail begins as a narrow singletrack with exposed rocks and roots, descending into dense rhododendron thickets, with small drop-offs formed by root bands that will be more difficult in the uphill direction. The trail continues with a steep descent requiring tight maneuvering between the thickets, with leaf cover often concealing the underlying obstacles. Moisture tends to collect in this section, causing the trail to become troughed in places. As it exits the thickets, the trail winds along a hillside through tall, slender trees, remaining well-defined and marked with signs, making it easy to follow. It reenters dense rhododendron, where riders encounter slick, technical root climbs before the southern end widens up into road width before the junction with Trail 13.
