Trail Overview

The route travels primarily through Monongahela National Forest on maintained Forest Service gravel roads. A section of the route passes through private land and rolling farmland on gravel road. The ascent from the FSR to the summit at Spruce Knob is fully paved. Spruce Knob is the highest point in West Virginia with 360-degree expansive views. The route passes by two NF camping areas and several dispersed sites can also be found. Spruce Knob Lake offers fishing and kayaking opportunities. Numerous hiking trailheads are located along the route. There's very little cell service anywhere along the route.

Mostly paved. The low shoulder when going down brings you pretty close to the edge when passing other cars. There was a good bit of traffic, saw about 20-30 people at the top.

Great place to visit with family for camping, fishing, and hiking trails. It’s a paved road but the views were beautiful

Coming from the east the climb to spruce knob is paved. The road is narrow and depending on the time of day or day of the week can have a good bit of oncoming traffic. There is a nice lookout of the eastern valley 3/4 of the way up. Make a right at the fork to continue to the top of spruce knob. There is plenty of parking and vault toilets. To get to the highest point take the short hike to the tower. When continuing down from the knob the road turns to gravel and can have many potholes and washboarded sections based on the time of the year. There are many hiking trailheads along the descent of fsr 112. At the intersection of fsr 112 and fsr 1 taking fsr 1 goes back to pavement and takes you by spruce knob lake campground and spruce knob lake. Both are worth checking out and during a new moon the lake provides some of the best star gazing I've ever seen. fsr 1 ends at county road 29.

The parts that were unpaved were just gravel. Some bad potholes here and there with some washboard. Just take it easy. The views were amazing but the ice and wind sept trees were quite a sight!
