Trail Overview

This route travels from just outside Thomas, WV connecting back to WV 48. The route is not well maintained and has varying terrain. Mud and natural rock make up the base with some small washes and ledges throughout. Several small stream crossings with flow dependent on recent weather. Multiple scenic views of the canyon along the route with a nice viewpoint as listed on the map on a rock outcropping. Dispersed camping sites can be found along the route. The Olson Fire tower offers 360 degree views of the surrounding area.

rocks aren't overly large but recent weather conditions contribute to the amount of mud or water flow.

This trail is labeled as a green trial but should be changed to a blue trail. It could be very technical and challenging for an inexperienced person just starting out overlanding. The trail is very rocky and rough. There are two wash out areas that require a high clearance vehicle and 4x4.

I managed to complete this in a stock Subaru OBW. The AWD system in this car is quite capable on this trail. This is the most challenging trail I've been on. Most of it was very doable--but the washouts are very taxing with the limited approach angle on the OBW. Coming west from Douglas, I was able to get through both washouts, with the help from some really nice guys along the trail who helped spot and push me out of a rut. The first washout was particularly difficult. I would not recommend you do it alone in anything like I was driving. I wouldn't have attempted it without them. The broken pipe obstacle towards the end of the trail had a boulder that I had to build a rock ramp over. All in all this was a fun trail, regardless, and would be much easier if with better approach angles.

Camped at Blackwater Falls for the weekend and decided to check out some nearby trails. Started out in the early afternoon from the Douglas Road end while it was still spitting rain/overcast. The sun came out and cleared up the sky for us for some nice scenery. The trail is washed out/large puddles in a lot of areas. Water crossings have faster flowing water due to all the recent rain, but they are passable with careful lines. Use caution at the water crossing that has a drainage pipe going through it - the pipe is actually broken in two now so be careful with tire placement in case there are sharp ends. Ended at the Olson Tower where we got to see some nice views. Definitely for high clearance 4x4s. We had an XJ with a 4 inch lift on 31s and a stock height JLU on 33s going through and had a few clearance issues at times, patricularly in some of the puddles and on rocks. Lots of places to smack a diff if you aren't careful. Overall, a fun trail and an awesome addition to our first camping/trailing trip.

Nothing too difficult, lots of small mud puddles throughout the trail. The two major obstacles are the two washouts. The one on the west side has gotten worse since the last time that I was here. This trail should be doable for just about any 4x4 with a good driver.

Trail was in good shape. Mudholes while deep at times have solid bottoms and were passible by stock 4WD vehicles in our group. Biggest obstacle is the washout that may require a spotter for comfort purposes.

Great starter offroad trail to test out your new lift! The trek had no issues except at the pipe crossing at the end, it was a little slippery. Trail has a few trails to walk down and see some nice views. Mud holes weren't too deep and the water was low at the creek crossing. Becareful around the pipe crossing at the end, one wrong move and you'll be changing a tire, but with a spotter you should pull out fine.

Well I had a blast to say the least, me and my dads new to him 2023 4runner trd offroad stock. My stock ranger made it through. Definitely suprsied to see people making it through in sedans such as an outback. Definitely have a spare tire as lots of sharp rocks but even on a super wet day while there are lots of puddles they are rather full of traction weather it be because they are rock under or frozen mud I count tell you without xray vision. Needless to say give it a shot with 4x4 and clearance.

Trail covered in about 4 to 6 inches of snow mostly throughout. Some lighter spots where it gets more sun, but that just made for puddles and mud, which was fun. Where it was snow covered, soft and easy throughout. Took it a little slow being unfamiliar with the trail and with snow on top. A couple of more technical creek crossings, nothing that could be done in a car, but standard 4x4 would probably be okay, but clearance made me feel better. Would be up to do this again in spring and summer. Nice trail, especially with all the nearby scenery and local waterholes.

Great trail. Conditions on 1/1/26 were snowy with 8-10” on the trail. I was the second or third vehicle on after the snow had fallen. If you do it, you need to go over to the Olson fire watch tower and give it a climb. Very cool!

Went during the winter storm warning in about 12-18” of snow. No ice as the snow is fresh. Made it all the way up to Olson fire tower. Definitely the first people on the trail since snow fall. Cleared some great tracks. Only got stuck once but used some traction boards and was able to power thru using a 2021 JLUR with 2.5” lift and 33” ATs.

Coming from the lookout tower side the first water crossing was tricky but manageable. Nothing too bad for a while. Around the middle of the trail right after the one train plaque the mud hole on the left frozen over but manageable. After that the next section was washed out but all doable. The least capable truck with us was a stock 2002 Tundra. Every feature was conquered with ease.

2 really good spots that you need to consider your angle of attack on, lots of decent mud holes and of course the pot holes are there. Passed a group of 9 at the Olson Tower side, then later on down the trail a group of 5. If you decide to do the off shoot trails; the leaves have fallen and they will slide you anyway they want.

This was no big deal for us in an AWD Outback Wilderness. Most of the trail is a 1-2 with a couple fun spots that are in the 3 zone. We have a total of 11" of clearance which helps quite a lot. The stock 4Runner that was with us dragged skids in places we did not. With some good spotters, the washouts are very easy. The steep one has a go around, that while rockier than the main line, has less aggressive angles and we had no problem getting through it. That said, while I've been in spicier situations before, full skids and sliders made me feel a lot better about being in a less capable rig. Most moderately armored AWD vehicles would do ok on this trail as long as you understand your limitations.

This trail is excellent absolutely loved it. It’s just hard enough to be fun but not so hard you are worried about breaking something. Almost all the mud holes have a hard bottom except for one. Pin striping was minimal. As for the washout the bypass is more sketchy than the actual washout. Being a full size rig taking the washout I dint scrape. Definitely check out the fire tower.
