Trail Overview
Danby (FS 10) is a straightforward forest road best suited for casual offroaders and overlanders looking for a quiet drive through the Green Mountain National Forest with minimal technical challenge. Running between Danby-Landgrove Road and Little Michigan trailheads along the edges of the Peru Peak and Big Branch Wilderness areas, this easy route follows a primarily gravel and native dirt surface that is typically well maintained but can develop rough patches, shallow ruts, and soft sections depending on recent weather. The road is accessible to any street-legal vehicle, including AWD crossovers, though higher clearance is helpful for navigating occasional uneven stretches and minor drainage features that form along the route’s gradual elevation changes.
Conditions on FS 10 can shift quickly during Vermont’s wetter seasons, with mud and soft shoulders becoming the primary obstacles, especially in spring and after heavy rain, and the road is seasonally closed from December through April. Drivers should expect narrow segments with limited opportunities to pass or turn around, requiring situational awareness on blind corners and tighter corridors. As a designated U.S. Forest Service road, travel is strictly confined to the established roadway, with adjacent wilderness boundaries clearly restricting any motorized access beyond the corridor. Temporary closures may occur following storms or maintenance needs, so checking current conditions through the Manchester Ranger District is recommended before heading out.
