Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. This route travels across open desert terrain on a lightly maintained sandy dirt track with occasional small rocks and shallow ruts. The drive is generally easy in dry conditions and winds through low brush, scattered junipers, and wide-open views before reaching the overlook. As you approach the rim, the landscape changes from flat desert to broken slickrock and scattered stone ledges near the edge. The destination is a dramatic overlook of the Sid’s Mountain Wilderness, where towering canyon walls, deep washes, and layered desert mesas stretch for miles in every direction. There are multiple spots to stop, explore, and take in the scenery. Use caution near the cliff edges, especially with children, pets, or during windy conditions. Avoid travel after heavy rain, as sandy sections can become soft and difficult.

Difficulty

The trail is primarily sandy dirt with minor rocks, shallow ruts, and a few uneven slickrock sections near the overlook. No major obstacles or technical climbs are present. The main hazards are soft sand after weather, washouts, and extreme caution is needed near the canyon rim. Low range is typically not required, but good tires and basic ground clearance are recommended. Avoid during or after heavy rain.

History

The San Rafael Swell is a massive geologic uplift shaped by erosion into canyons, mesas, domes, and reefs. Many roads in the region were later used for ranching, mining, and energy exploration, creating the access routes travelers still use today.
