Trail Overview

Dry Creek Trail starts near the top of Hurricane Mesa near Virgin, Utah. The location has a very interesting history, as it is where the ejection seat test site of the 1960s is located. That area is still restricted today. Dry Creek Trail starts as a milder, narrow, winding trail through the cedar trees. There is petrified wood along the trail and the overlooks of Zion are spectacular. After coming to a large open area that is good for a lunch break, the trail becomes increasingly rocky and tight, with several steep climbs on loose rock. The trail can accommodate 72-inch SXSs or Jeeps. Most vehicles will have to do some 3-point turns to make some of the tight turns. It is a challenge for shorter vehicles but quite technical for longer vehicles or 4-seat SXSs. This trail starts fairly easily with a great view of the Virgin;as you get deeper, the trail narrows. You will find steep inclines and declines with large rocks and gravel and frequent washouts. Keep in mind weather conditions, especially flooding and lightning.

This is always a fun trail and the conditions have been pretty good lately. There are some highly eroded sections toward the middle. See if you can find the petrified tree!

Most of the trail was hard pack and dry. Direction traveled was north to south from the campgrounds to the old test site. Some of the steeper climbs were torn up pretty good and had a lot of loose rock and silt. Would not advise going in wet weather as the ground has lots of clay and turns super slick.

Staged on the east side from kolob terrace road. Ran the trail out to the Western edge and all the way back. Lots of twists and turns dodging rocks and tree branches. The climbs were hard with all the turns but the traction was good.

This is a fun trail, that is called Dry Creek, per the sign at the start. For folks that are going to attempt this on two wheels, you should not attempt this trail as a solo rider. There are several very steep descents and a couple very steep and curved ascents, that also have loose soil and rocks. I live here and have ridden it a few times with friends and only once made it without help.

We completed the trail on Side x Sides, NOT motorcycles. I doubt I would want to do this trail on a motorcycle. Took us about 4.5 hours including a few breaks. Trail was much more difficult that I expected. Do not attempt this trail alone. It was fun, but I do not need to do this trail again.

Fun trail. Glad I wasn't by myself, as some of the ascents have loose soil and make it tough to get to the top. We took our dirt bikes. It would be challenging in spots for any rig.

Would not recommend doing this trail alone. Many off camber and steep blind climbs and descents. Beautiful views. No wildlife. One small stream crossing after you get to the graded road. Go with friends and enjoy

There’s one water crossing where there’s is a petrified tree on the creek bank. There an other petrified tree at the other end of the trail near where you see tires. This is a tight trail for SXS but we had a 80” wide and four seaters with us and they made it through. Lots of steep up and down hills and off cambers that will make you pucker.
